As the premiere gutter company in Keller, you’d expect us to say that yes, absolutely all homes need a rain gutter system. The truth is, however, that is not always the case! Some homes are absolutely fine without gutters, and today, we’re going to let you know if that applies to your house or not.
Does Your House Need Gutters?
Your home may not need gutters if:
- You have a 6”-10” wide roof overhang.
- You have a concrete, gravel, or stone apron around your house that is supported by an adequate storm drainage system.
- The ground slopes away from your house.
- You have a very shallow roof.
- You already have something installed that successfully diverts rain water.
- You live in an area that doesn’t get a lot of rain.
Of course, if you live in Keller, you know that last point can be a bit of a problem. Keller gets about 38 inches of rain annually, which is almost right on the nose of the U.S. average of 39. Unless you live in an arid climate like Arizona, gutters are usually a good idea.
Other Things to Consider
If you happen to buy a house without gutters, that doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t need them. Many homeowners remove old gutters without ever replacing them. Make sure your house meets all of the criteria we listed above before deciding whether or not to install any. Be sure to keep an eye out for water pooling near the base of your house as well!
Also, if you’re having a house built and the builder tells you that you don’t need gutters because the ground slopes away from it, take this with a grain of salt. Many builders try to avoid installing gutters to reduce costs, and after the house is built, it’s common for the ground to shift and settle, which can change the slope enough to where gutters become necessary.
