Your gutter system is a very important shield for your home; without it, Mother Nature would unleash her wrath on your house’s vulnerable foundation. However, rust is something that often quietly threatens the structural integrity of gutters, even to the point of warranting total replacement if things aren’t addressed. Continue reading to learn more about rust and how it can impact your gutters, along with what you can do to repair them.

What Is Rust?

Rust occurs when oxygen, water, and certain types of metal interact; particularly those that contain iron and steel. It’s a corrosive problem that eats away at metals, causing holes and reducing structural stability. The rate at which rust forms depends on the type of metal, the amount of oxygen, and the level of humidity/moisture.

In the past, gutters were often made of galvanized steel, which is strong and hardy, but likely to develop problems with rust. Keep in mind that many older homes today still have these steel gutters. On the other hand, many modern buildings are made from materials treated with anti-rust paints – aluminum is a popular choice. However, rust is something that ultimately threatens all gutters.

Why Is Rust a Problem for Gutters?

Rust is unsightly and instantly ages the appearance of homes, but what’s worse is the fact that it is an indicator that your system has been compromised. A rusted drain will negatively affect how water from rainfall makes a path away from your home. Rust can also cause holes and rips to form in the hangers, guards, elbows, and downspouts.

Needless to say, this type of damage will have a severe impact on your foundation; gutters are there to protect your house, so if your system is compromised, it might lead to costly damage to your home that extends beyond your gutter system!

How Can I Repair My Rusted Gutters?

Any type of gutter maintenance begins with cleaning the area of all debris; you should be doing this regularly anyway since built-up debris threatens your system and can also keep areas of rust hidden. Minor damage can typically be scrubbed away with a wire brush and then coated with an appropriate metal primer. However, this is normally a preventive measure that usually only halts major damage.

If rust has already caused serious damage, such as large holes right through the metal, it often requires more extensive repair. Metal flashing and roofing cement can often be used to cover these holes. But if it’s becoming obvious that larger sections of your gutter system are rusted, it might be time to consider the installation of a new one.

If the idea of getting on your roof to handle your gutter repair on your own doesn’t appeal to you, you shouldn’t hesitate to contact a team of professionals. Ultimately, your gutters are meant to serve your home well – meaning you should take the time to thoroughly address issues like rust that threaten their integrity!
